The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) has been recognized as a “Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion” for the sixth consecutive year, achieving a top score on the 2024 Disability Equality Index (DEI).
The Disability Equality Index is a comprehensive benchmarking tool created to help businesses advance disability inclusion. The index is a joint initiative of Disability:IN and the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD). It evaluates companies on a scale of 0 to 100 across six main categories: Culture & Leadership, Enterprise-Wide Access, Employment Practices, Community Engagement, Supplier Inclusion, and Responsible Procurement.
“Kroger has a strong commitment to offering a workplace where associates of all abilities can meaningfully contribute, thrive, and grow,” said Tim Massa, executive vice president and chief associate experience officer at Kroger.
The company’s “Our Abilities” associate resource group is one of the programs that supports employees with disabilities. Lucy Markovich, the group’s co-chair and a Kroger technology & digital product manager, stated, “Kroger has created a space for every associate to feel included and empowered to be their authentic self.”
In addition to the DEI recognition, Kroger has received several other awards for its workplace environment. These include being honored by Handshake for excellence in early career hiring, named a best workplace for diverse professionals by Mogul, and recognized by Newsweek as one of America’s Greatest Workplaces for Diversity and one of America’s Most Trustworthy Companies. Computerworld has also ranked the company among its top 100 best places to work in IT.
The Kroger Co. is a major US retailer with over 400,000 associates. It serves more than 11 million customers daily through its e-commerce platform and physical stores under various banner names. The company’s stated purpose is “To Feed the Human Spirit,” which includes its ZeroHungerZeroWaste initiative, which aims to end hunger and eliminate waste in the communities it serves.
For 2025, participation in the Disability Equality Index is open to companies in Brazil, Canada, Germany, India, Japan, the Philippines, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
