The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has introduced temporary measures to support Lebanese nationals residing in the United States. The announcement includes a new Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for Lebanon, allowing Lebanese nationals who have resided in the U.S. since October 16, 2024, to apply for protection and work authorization due to the ongoing conflict and instability in Lebanon. This TPS designation will remain in effect for 18 months as U.S. authorities continue diplomatic efforts aimed at stability across the Israel-Lebanon border.
In addition, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has published guidelines for applying for Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) under Deferred Enforced Departure (DED), which President Biden authorized on July 26, 2024. This permits eligible Lebanese nationals to apply for EADs valid until January 25, 2026. Details are available through the Federal Register and DHS websites, with USCIS handling EAD applications on a case-by-case basis.
DHS has also issued a Special Student Relief Notice for approximately 1,740 F-1 nonimmigrant students from Lebanon, allowing them to work additional hours and modify course loads while maintaining F-1 status.
An estimated 11,000 Lebanese nationals are expected to benefit from TPS and DED provisions, alongside students eligible for relief measures. Additional information on application procedures for both TPS and DED will be published soon in the Federal Register.
